This is a thorny dark fruited wine with medium-plus body. The palate delivers more complexity with blueberry, dates, black currants, and a touch of black peppercorns with medium acid and fine tannins.
WINE INFORMATION
Montsant has long been in the shadow of neighboring Priorat, but is starting to come into the limelight. The town of Capçanes was a densely planted area until hit by phylloxera at the turn of the 19th century; in the aftermath, only about 20% of the vines were replanted. It was not until 1996 when the first commercial wines from this city released, made by a small co-op. The Jewish community in nearby Barcelona contacted the co-op to produce a kosher wine. The co-op agreed, but the production required the installation of new equipment and the identification of high quality fruit to be vinified under controlled Mevushal conditions. Alhtough the kosher wine accounts for only 2% of Capçanes’ production, the overhaul required greatly benefited other winemaking. Capçanes now has about 250 hectares under vine, about half of which is Garnacha, with many vines older than 80. Farming is sustainable and practicing organic; in 2010, half the vineyards received organic certification.
Grapes are grown at fairly high altitudes (150-450 m); the soils include granite and slate with some clay and sand at lower elevations. Grapes are hand harvested and each variety is vinified separately in stainless steel. Once the wine has finished fermenting the Cariñena is oak-aged, then the final blend is made and it ages for 6 additional months in tank before being bottled.
