Tasting Notes

Woodsy aromas with floral notes and red fruit. Lite potpourri with medium acid and tannins are supported by more black pepper and espresso. The palate showcases more barrel influence with toast, blackberry, and grilled plum. Leather, dark soil, black inky fruit finish off this complex wine that would be worthy of ageing.

WINE INFORMATION

Bodegas Olarra started in Rioja in 1973, building a winery in the central city of Logroño, embracing modern techniques within a traditional framework. They added a second winery in 1985, making age-worthy wine and cava. A third winery was added in 2000, focusing on single-vineyard wines, using a “chateau” system as the model. Now Grupo Olarra, they have expanded their reach beyond Rioja, and this wine is an example. Grapes for this wine come from a 340-acre (138 hectares) vineyard on an estate east of Aranda del Duero at or above an altitude of 2,750 feet. All are planted to Tempranillo under the local name of Tinta del Pais.

Vines average 35 years old and are harvested manually. The grapes went through a maceration and fermentation process lasting for 18 days, with malolactic conversion taking place in concrete tanks. In line with the excellent quality of the 2014 estate fruit, the wine was aged for 19 months in medium-toast 225-liter American and French oak barrels, of an average age of 2.5 years. The wine spent a further 20 months in bottle before release. This is a library wine, coming to market some time after the first release sold out.
