Tasting Notes

A fragrant bouquet with red and black cherries, and a touch of florality. This wine is pure and appealing with a medium bodied finely textured palate. The fruit on the palate has tart currants, blackberries, with just the right density with balanced tannins.

WINE INFORMATION

Bodegas Caro is a partnership of Domains Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) and the Catena family that began in 1999. Initial enthusiasm quickly became a concrete plan to produce a single wine that would combine French and Argentine cultures and the two signature grapes of each producer, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon.  Amancaya is meant to be a representation of the Bordeaux and Argentine styles. The goal is to be more fruit forward with the higher percentage of Malbec. The Catena family has produced wine for four generations, using its vast knowledge of the high altitude terroirs of the Mendoza region as well as its passion for Malbec to find the best vineyards. Lafite contributed its centuries-old skills in growing, vinifying and ageing Cabernet Sauvignon.

The particularly harsh winter in the foothills of the Andes Cordillera was followed by a sunny spring, the rest of the season had ideal conditions with some rain and a completely dry March. This is typical of the Mendoza region, with dry, sunny days and a big difference in temperatures between day and night-time, enabling the grapes to ripen slowly and steadily, softening the tannins while preserving a superb freshness. On 25 March 2018, temperatures dropped once again in the high-altitude vineyard but the vines coped well with the colder weather and ripening continued without any problems, resulting in one of the best harvests of this decade.

This wine is aged for 12 months in bordeaux barriques. The word Amancaya is a native peoples word for “flower found at high altitudes” located in the Andes in the Mendoza.
