Exotic white fruits and citrus fruit (grapefruit) mix with floral notes of linden and acacia. The palate is rich, generous, ample and intensely fruity, with very good tension. Lemon and grapefruit flavors from the Sauvignon Blanc delicately balance with the exotic sweetness (lychee, mango) of the ripe Semillon. Mineral notes bring good salinity and freshness.
Located in Sauternes, on one of the greatest white wine terroirs in France , the Clos des Lunes is a magnificent rolling vineyard planted with old Sémillon and Sauvignon Blanc vines. On these very old vines, some perfectly golden clusters are chosen and delicately sorted in passes, grape by grape, by hand.
This region is celebrated for its dessert wines; however, Clos les Lunes’ focus is on dry whites and the winery makes three separate cuvées. The estate covers 75 hectares (185 acres) with an average age of 35 years. The soils are composed of three complementary terroirs. On the Sauternes side, there are deep gravels with groundwater sources which provide the power to the cuvée. On the Bommes side, gravel soils on clay-limestone substrate give freshness to the wine. And at Barsac, the alluvial deposits from the Garonne River provide minarality. Each plot is harvested at peak ripeness with hand-picking in small crates.
Slow pressing takes place in a pneumatic winepress, without destemming or maceration. Then comes débourbage (cold settling) by gravity flow in a cold room. Aging is on fine lees with regular stirring (bâtonnage) for 6 to 7 months (25% in barrels, 75 % in small stainless steel vats).
