WINE INFORMATION
Founded in 2002, Aphros is a project helmed by Vasco Croft, a man born in Lisbon. He grew up interested in metaphysics and astronomy, but eventually became an architect, student of biodynamic agriculture and craftsman who enjoyed hand work such as sculpture, woodworking and furniture design.
Grape varieties Loureiro and Vinhão have grown in these vineyards for centuries and serve as the reference point for the region. The grapes are sourced from the Casal do Paço vineyard, located in the Lima sub-region of Vinho Verde. The vines of Casal do Paço are situated in a south facing amphitheater north of the Lima River on gentle slopes with cool Atlantic breezes. Casal do Paço is now recognized as a model ecological winery committed to the preservation of its ecosystems that not only include the vines but entire forests of acacias, oaks, eucalyptus and century-old trees, the home of wild boars, foxes and eagles.
The grape growing has always been based on biodynamics and the winemaking is traditional, taking place in the basement beneath the main house. The cave is buried and naturally cool and damp. Grapes are fermented with natural yeasts and aged in stainless steel tanks on their fine lees.
