Tasting Notes

Aromas of blackberry, black cherry, kalamata olives, forest floor and Christmas spices. On the palate this wine is complex and supple: flavors of wild blackberry and black cherry alongside graphite and baking spices. This is a full body wine with medium-plus tannins and a long finish.

WINE INFORMATION

The Cesari winery was founded in 1936 by Gerardo Cesari, with 40 hectares of vineyards near Verona.  His son Franco took the reins in the early 1960s, expanding the vineyards and exporting Cesari wines.  The winery makes single vineyard Amarone as well as both new and traditional Veronese wines.

Derived from the Italian word gemma, which has a dual meaning of “vine bud” and “precious gem,” Jèma is a pure expression of Corvina – the region’s signature varietal. Produced from a 3-hectare single vineyard located in the heart of Valpolicella Classico, this wine is a true “gem.”

This wine is made using the appassimento method: the grapes were dried prior to vinification to achieve higher concentration of flavors without losing structure. Grapes were selectively hand-harvested at the end of October and then dried for 20 days. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks. After this the wine spends 18 months in French oak barrel and then it is racked into large oak casks where it spends an additional 6 months. Then the wine is bottled and aged for one year before it is released. This bottling is only made in exceptional years.
