The viticultural history of the Barraud family began in 1905, when Jean-Marie Barraud first purchased parcels in Vergisson, the highest point in the Mâconnais. Since that time, Daniel Barraud, along with his son Julien and wife Martine (the master of the vines), have turned his family’s domaine into the benchmark producer of the region and a must-have for all Burgundy lovers.
The geographical area of this appellation extends over 8 communes and is divided into two small islands separated from each other by the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. It is made up of the villages of Davayé, Prissé and Solutré-Pouilly in the north, and Chânes, Chasselas, Leynes, Saint-Amour and Saint-Vérand in the south. All these villages are located in the extreme south of the Mâconnais subregion and of the Burgundy wine region as a whole. Pouilly-Fuissé is an important white-wine appellation located in the Mâcon district of southern Burgundy. Its wines command the highest prices in the Mâconnais, and only Chardonnay may be used. Vineyards are located in sun traps on limestone soils, producing ripe, full-bodied wines. Wines are typically aged a year in barrel before release.
The En Buland couvee comes from 80-year old Chardonnay vines situated on the hill side of the Roche de Solutré. The last and slowest of Barraud’s vineyards to ripen, it produces the most textured and concentrated of the wines. It is aged for 12 months in barrel (35% new), then 3 months in tank.
