Tasting Notes

Abundant fruit aromas on the nose, including acai and blueberries. Tangy purple and blue fruits as well as blueberry jam dominate the palate and balance nicely with silky, well-integrated tannins.

WINE INFORMATION

Matthieu Barret was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and studied viticulture in Beaune. He is a 7th generation vigneron, joining his grandfather in Cornas (Northern Rhone) in 1997. His dedication to eco-sensitive viticulture was evident from the beginning–in 2000 he chose to work the vineyards organically. In 2006, in order to pursue greater purity of fruit, he switched from barrels to concrete tanks. In 2012, he stepped away from machines and replaced them with horses, mules and manual labor. He also began to create green spaces on the winery property and to diversify the eco-system. Matthieu owns 11 hectares (26 acres) in Cornas and 150 in the larger AOP (375 acres in the greater region).

These vines were planted on average 30 years ago and hail from two sources in the Ardeche: 50% from the village of Roussas and 50% from the village of Eclassan. The grapes are organically and biodynamically farmed and the resulting low yields are harvested by hand. After an early harvest, reminiscent of Beaujolais Nouveau, they undergo a 15-day maceration in stainless steel before a natural-yeast fermentation in concrete tanks. The wine is bottled without fining and with the addition of very little sulfur.
