The first impression of this wine is both intense and elegant. Lemons, limes and a layered, biscuity richness lift the aromatics out of the glass. There is also a light savory character that accompanies an almost briny minerality.
WINE INFORMATION
Three Brooms is Barker’s Marque’s single estate wine. They had thought the wines would be called Barker's Marque, but friends and customers convinced them otherwise. Three Brooms is the culmination of years of Barker family tradition. From 1888, their Grandfather Charles' horse-drawn tea cart served first tea and then beer to the race goers at Epsom Downs racecourse in England. The Three brooms (or besoms) were first lashed to the front of a tented pub in 1918 and became a landmark for 20 years. The family hospitality tradition is kept alive by Three Brooms. The family vineyard is half a mile from the sea in Marlborough, New Zealand. Simon Barker, the winemaker, lives there and his wife is the viticulturalist. Brother Ed Barker lives and works in Marblehead on Boston’s North Shore; he imports the wine into the U.S.
This single vineyard wine is planted on clay soil in the Blind River area of Marlborough. It is intended to be genuinely aromatic and fresh, with subtler fruit, minerality, and delicacy and elegance not found in the other two Sauvignon Blanc offerings from Barker’s Marque. The Barker’s Marque Wines are certified under the Sustainable Wine Growing program, which means that vineyard, winemaking and bottling are certified sustainable. The grapes are fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel. Extended lees contact and battonage help bring the Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavors out.
