Aromas include pineapple, baked apple/pear, and vanilla. The palate is rich and round with toasty oak, more pineapple and tropical fruits with a touch of nectarine. Baking spices and vanilla linger on the long finish.
WINE INFORMATION
Wente Vineyards was founded in 1883 and it is the country's longest, continuously operated family-owned winery. Blending traditional and innovative winemaking practices, the 5th generation of Wente family draws from estate vineyards in the Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco.
In 1912, 2nd Generation Ernest Wente persuaded his father and founder, C.H. Wente to import Chardonnay cuttings from the vine nursery at University of Montpellier France to the Livermore Valley and hand-picked the best of the best vines. Today, over 80% of all California Chardonnay stems from the Wente Clone. In viticulture a clone refers to vines descended from a single plant by taking a cutting or bud; in theory, each vine grown on a clone is genetically identical to the original vine.
This Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from Riva Ranch Vineyard in Arroyo Seco, Monterey. Grapes have been grown here since the 1960s. Grapes are fermented in a combination of stainless steel (10%) and barrels (90%), 60% new and 40% second use French and American oak. The wine was aged sur-lie for 8 months, where it underwent 100% malolactic fermentation.
Wente Vineyards is certified sustainable. Some of their practices and vineyard management that have helped them achieve this certification include cork recycling, recycling cooking oils, dedicating 1,600 acres for land grazing cattle, organic olive groves, they integrate drip irrigation, as well as the use natural oil with black pepper and cinnamon on the vine to help with mildew control.
