Fiorini Lambrusco Becco 2019

Tasting Notes

This is a fun wine, with aromas that are fresh, fruity and inviting.  Dark fruits take hold first, including black cherry and plum, following through to notes of black pepper, strawberry, and spiced apple cake.  The palate is round, presenting earthy notes blended with cured meats, red currant, and black cherry.

WINE INFORMATION
For more than 100 years, the Fiorini family has celebrated Lambrusco, crafting wines that from Lambrusco clones that range from simple and fresh, to more complex, traditional stylings.  The 30 hectare estate sits at the base of the Apennine Mountains near Modena, in the region of Emilia-Romagna.

Passed down from their father, Giuseppe Fiorini, the winery is currently managed by third generation brother and sister team, Alberto and Cristina Fiorini.  Together, they strive to create wines that express the region; wines that have a personal, unmistakeable style. Modern technical tools and collaboration with notable winemaker, Francesco Clemency, help them to achieve consistent high quality wines.

This wine is a blend of 80% Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro and 20% Lancellotta harvested from a 5-hectare vineyard planted in 1986.  Vines are planted at around 820 feet above sea level in soils composed mainly of red clay.  (Lancellotta is a Lambrusco clone with light tannin structure that helps soften the impact of the highly tannic and inky Grasparossa clone.)  Maceration lasts about 6 days for the Grasparossa and 10 days for the Lancellotta.  The wine owes its light sparkle (frizzante) to the charmat method, where unlike méthode champenoise used in Champagne, secondary fermentation takes place in a large, closed pressurized tank.  This process lasted for 60 days.

In total, there are 8 Lambrusco DOC regions, of which Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro is the smallest.  This region is home to the Grasparossa clone, of which the DOC requires 85% of all Lambrusco produced here to be composed of (as well as requiring a minimum of 11% alc.vol).
