Tasting Notes

Bright aromas of blackberry, cedar, vanilla, chocolate and flowers.  The palate is dominated by blackberry jam, with layers of spice, mocha, clove, cinnamon, campfire and chocolate covered blueberries (particularly on the long finish). It is full bodied with medium acidity and soft tannins.

WINE INFORMATION

Napa Valley AVA is an American Viticultural Area located in Napa County, California.  Considered one of the top wine regions in the United States, this new world region has a wine history dating back to the 19th century. Today the AVA contains 16 sub-appellations with AVA status. While some winemakers produce wines from the specific AVAs within the valley, the majority choose to blend their wines using a mix of wine grapes grown on the valley floor and the surrounding hillsides.

The winery is named after the AxR rootstock (Aramond x Rupestris) that was so prominent in building the modern California wine industry, AxR#1 eventually succumbed to Phylloxera. The history of the estate is compounded in layers and was home to the first woman vintner of California in 1886. It has changed hands over the course of 134 years to become a brewery, restaurant, inn, winery and saloon. Now it is solely dedicated to winemaking.

The grapes are fermented in a combination of oak barrels (20%) and stainless steel (80%) and then the wine is aged for 16 months in 40% new oak.
