Aromas of dried cherries, rose petals, and a hint of dark chocolate introduce this Pinot Noir. Sultry tannins and balanced acidity support flavors of cola, lavender, exotic spice, and just a trace of vineyard terroir in a lasting, earthy finish.
WINE INFORMATION
The vineyards of Lucas & Lewellen are located in the three wine growing valleys of Santa Barbara County: Santa Ynez Valley, Los Alamos Valley, and the Santa Maria Valley. These valley vineyards benefit from a rare transverse mountain range topography. An east-west orientation channels the cool ocean air of the Pacific into the coastal valleys, allowing warm days and cool nights, to produce a long, gentle growing season. Remember the movie, “Sideways?” This transverse effect cannot be underestimated -- the inland ebb and flow of fog and ocean breezes make the region one of the coolest viticultural areas in California. This means that the fruit has an unusually long "hang time" on the vine, allowing it to fully develop the acids, flavors and tannins needed to produce wines of distinctive character.
Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards is family-owned and operated. It was started in 1996 by Louis Lucas, one of the first commercial grape growers in Santa Barbara/Santa Ynez and Royce Lewellen, a former Superior Court Judge and Santa Barbara community leader. Royce passed away in September 2020; his son Michael is a Managing Partner. The winery practices old world and sustainable farming methods with the goal of being stewards of the land for future generations.
The hand-harvested grapes for this Pinot Noir were carefully selected for complexity and elegance coming from several different clones of Pinot Noir.. Aging takes place for ten months on the lees using 30% new French oak.
