Tasting Notes

This is a classic and well-made Bordeaux exhibiting earthy purple and red wild berries and leather on the nose. It is medium weight on the palate and lightly earthy with integrated toast, vanilla and dark chocolate notes. The fruit is black (lightly smoky black currants and black cap raspberries) with refreshing acidity and velvety tannins. This wine reflects an overall cool climate yet has been picked at optimum ripeness. Elegant, persistent and high quality.

The Legende R Bordeaux rouge is part of The Collection, a line of wines produced by the renowned Lafite family of Domaine Barons de Rothschild. The Lafite fief dates back to the 14th century surrounding the commune of Pauillac in Bordeaux. By the early 18th century, claret from the estate was being traded in London. Chateau Lafite became recognized as the finest and most prestigious in France and “the King’s wine” to be enjoyed by the court at Versailles and revered by the ambassador to France from the young United States Republic, Thomas Jefferson. During the famed 1855 classification of the Medoc, Chateau Lafite was formally recognized as a First Growth or “leader among fine wines” a deserved honor from which the estate has never looked back.

Baron James de Rothschild purchased the estate in 1868 and through phylloxera, the Great Depression and two world wars; it was able to survive suffering and restrictions, transferring through the generations eventually to Baron Elie de Rothschild who oversaw its rebirth and his nephew Baron Eric de Rothschild who extended its holdings with acquisitions in France and abroad.

Today, Domaine Barons de Rothschild owns Chateau Lafite Rothschild and three other chateaux in Bordeaux. It also owns wineries in the Languedoc, Argentina, Chile and China. In 1995, the Lafite group developed The Collection, a series of Bordeaux appellation wines using purchased fruit, of which Legende R is part. Domaine Barons de Rothschild now oversees 1200 hectares (3,000 acres), upholding a spirit of excellence and tradition in both vineyard and cellar. This wine is aged for nine months, 60% in tank and 40% in oak.
