Chappellett Mountain Cuvee 2019

Tasting Notes

From the producer: This alluring Bordeaux-varietal blend displays aromas of concentrated fruit and spice, with layers of red currant, cassis, cinnamon, vanilla and clove, as well as hints of earthy forest floor, wild sage and sweet toasty oak. On the palate, plush, impeccably balanced tannins carry the lush red and black fruit flavors to an elegant, lingering finish.

WINE INFORMATION

Donn and Molly Chappellet moved from Beverley Hills to Napa, purchasing their Pritchard Hills Vineyard in 1967. They are among the pioneers of high elevation hillside planting in Napa. Today, five of their six children work alongside their parents at Chappellet. All vineyard blocks (there are 34) are now certified organic, they provide their own electricity using solar panels, and half their vineyard equipment runs on biodiesel.

Grapes for this wine come from a combination of estate-grown and purchased fruit.

The 2019 growing season began with cool, rainy weather throughout winter and spring, which delayed budbreak slightly and resulted in a robust crop and vigorous canopies. To create the desired vine balance, the leaves and clusters were thinned, doing as many as three fruit-dropping passes depending on the needs of each vine. The weather remained temperate throughout summer, followed by perfectly timed warm weather in October. As a result, early ripening grapes yielded wines with dazzling aromatics, lovely energy and pure, fresh flavors, while our later-ripening varieties provided gorgeous color and concentration, with supple tannins and rich, soaring flavors.
