Sella & Mosca Vermentino La Cala 2020

Tasting Notes

Aromas of lemon, peach, seashells and almond blossoms. On the palate this dry wine shows classic Vermentino notes: salinity, raw almond, Bosc pear, white flowers, apricot and lemon oil. This medium body wine is complex and bright.

Drawn to the rustic character with its extreme geography and vinous diversity, Erminio Sella and Edgardo Mosca fell in love with Sardinia in 1890 and established Sella & Mosca, one of Italy’s most renowned wine estates. Sella & Mosca produces wines made exclusively from estate-grown grapes. In addition to native varieties such as Vermentino, Torbato, and Cannonau, the winery has successfully introduced international grape varieties, most notably Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sella & Mosca’s 1,600-acre estate, I Piani, constitutes the second largest contiguous vineyard in Italy, covering more than 1,200 acres of vines. In fact, it is one of the largest wine estates in Europe. Sardinia’s climate is hot and dry; inland vineyards cover mountainous terrain comprised of granite, schist, sandstone and limestone soil. The estate’s winery features multiple tasting rooms, an expertly designed enoteca (wine shop) and an exhibit showcasing replicas of archaeological finds unearthed during construction of the estate.

La Cala is the name of a stretch of Sardinian coastline, which due to its particular violet hues, is also known as La Cala Viola. La Cala comes from the region of Alghero, with soil rich in lime and clay and in an area strongly influenced by the sweeping salt-laden mistral winds. These elements, together with the vineyards’ location and exposure, enhance the savory and fruity expressions of this Vermentino.

After harvest, selected grape bunches undergo a brief, natural drying process beneath the warm autumnal sunlight. Following a gentle pressing, the juices are vinified under temperature controlled conditions.
