Veuve Fourny Premier Cru Champage Brut Rose NV

Tasting Notes

Wine Spectator 91 points: A light chalkiness accents this otherwise plush and creamy rosé, creating an interesting textural interplay that carries flavors of white cherry, green almond, fleur de sal and pink grapefruit pith, layered with well-cut acidity. Disgorged September 2018. Drink now through 2022. 350 cases imported.

WINE INFORMATION

The Champagne region is located in Northeastern France where the majority of grapes under production are the reds, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier and the white, Chardonnay. The region lies at the northern edge of the world's vineyard-growing areas, with lower average temperatures than any other French wine region. In this cool climate, grapes rarely ripen enough for standard winemaking, leaving growers with high acid grapes well-suited to the production of sparkling wines.

By French and European law, the mention of “Champagne” on labels is only to be used for wines produced in this region. Grower Champagnes are those Champagnes that are produced by the same estate that owns the vineyards where the grapes are grown. Récoltant-Manipulant is the term in French, and Grower Champagnes can be identified by "RM" on the wine label.

Veuve Fourny & Fils is a small family house that has been producing grower Champagne since 1856. The vineyard and production house are located in the prestigious Côte des Blancs premier cru village of Vertus, an appellation that allows for producers to grow both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Here grapes are grown sustainably on the 9 hectare estate rich in deep, chalky, and limestone soils.

Winemakers Charles and Emmanuel Fourny took the helm in 1993 and are the fifth generation in the Fourny family to produce grower Champagnes. About 30% of the Chardonnay grape is reserve wine (meaning it comes from the winery’s non-vintage stock). The final wine ages in bottle for 2 years before release
