Tasting Notes

Floral and red berry aromas jump from the glass.  The palate has refreshing acidity and a creamy texture to balance with notes of nectarine, strawberry and citrus.  The finish is dry with lingering minerality.

WINE INFORMATION

Kir-Yianni was founded in 1997 by Yiannis Boutaris (from the Boutari Wine Group founded in 1879 and, until recently, mayor of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city). Based in Naoussa, its vineyards spread from Naoussa over to Amyndeon, on the western side of Mount Vermion in Greece’s far northwest. He left the Boutari Wine Group in order to focus on a much smaller, quality-focused personal project. Today, the Kir-Yianni team, under the direction of Stelios Boutaris, Yiannis’ son, stands as one of the great producers in all of Greece, and a leading force in promoting the Xinomavro variety beyond Greece’s borders.

The grapes are sourced from the viticultural zone of Agios Panteleimon within the Amyndeon appellation in Florina, Northwestern Greece. The high altitude (700m) and the poor sandy soils of the area lead to the production of wines displaying finesse and a rare aromatic character. L’Esprit du Lac means “Spirit of the Lake” for the four surrounding lakes that act as a buffer zone create perfect weather conditions for the cultivation of Xinomavro, more temperate than expected in this continental climate. The grapes come from 60+-year- old vines, yielding no more than 6000 kg/ha. The selection of the vineyards was based on their soil, and the vines’ health and capacity to reach full maturity.

The grape must comes from the bleeding of the “Kali Riza” Xinomavro clone, which is more concentrated in phenolic ingredients. Selected yeast provides floral aromas. The wine ages for 4 months on the lees with regular batonnage (1-2 times a week) in order for the creamier mouthfeel to balance the high acidity.
