WINE INFORMATION

Raeburn is an Olde English term meaning, “the river where one goes to drink.” It is a fitting name for the winery that produces this Pinot Noir, which comes from the heart of the Russian River Valley where some of the world’s finest Pinot Noir grapes are grown. The Russian River Valley enjoys a cool climate thanks to the daily evening fog that flows from the Pacific Ocean in the west up the Russian River channel and east through the Petaluma Gap, producing diurnal temperature swings ranging from 35° to 40° F. This “natural air conditioning” allows the chardonnay grapes to ripen slowly while retaining bright, natural acidity.

2019 was a fantastic year in the Russian River Valley with a mild winter, until record rainfall occurred and flooded the vineyards during vine dormancy. This had no effect to the vines, other than improving the water table. A cool spring granted for a long bloom followed by a moderately hot summer. There was a nice heat spike in September which improved ripeness and no rain in October allowing the grapes to mature a few additional weeks leading to a later-than-normal harvest. Grapes of this vintage were harvested before the 2019 fires in Sonoma County.

The grapes were hand-picked during the cool early morning hours to preserve their fresh flavors. Once the grapes arrived at the winery, they were carefully destemmed and cold soaked for several days to enhance color and flavor. Fermentation took place in small, open top containers with twice daily punch downs to intensify color and structure. After a gentle presssing, the wine was racked several times and transferred into French oak barrels, 25% new, for 11 months of aging.
