Tasting Notes

This smooth and flavorful wine offers aromas of bright red berries with floral notes. The wine is fairly tart, with pomegranate, cranberry, and currant and a touch of blueberry. It is medium in body and length of the finish.

WINE INFORMATION

The grape Regent is color-intensive, a member of the small group of teinturier grapes whose flesh and juice is red. It was created in Germany in 1967 by Gerhardt Alleweldt in the Pfalz by crossing Diana (a Silvaner X Müller-Thurgau cross, both of which are vitis vinifera) with Chambourcin (a French-American hybrid). It was named after Le Régent, a 140.5-carat diamond found by a slave working in the Golkanda mine in India. The diamond was used to decorate the crown of Louis XV at his coronation in 1772; later Napoleon embellished his sword with it; since 1887, it has been in the French Royal Treasury in the Louvre. Regent ripens early, is winter hardy, and has very good resistance to downy and powdery mildew as well as botrytis bunch rot. It is grown in Germany, Switzerland, England, Sweden, and Belgium. It produces full-bodied wines with velvety tannins, suitable for early drinking as well as barrel ageing.

In the fall of 1922, a group of small winemakers in Auggen formed a cooperative to improve both the quality and quantity of their wines. In the spring of 1931, a group of 21 winemakers in the village of Laufen did the same. Both groups boasted good, southern-exposure vineyards on loess-loam soils. They ultimately merged in 2011, without compromising the independence of either. The Gertie & Max brand, which also includes a Chasselas (white), is made in Auggen for importer Willie Glückstern. All grapes are for both wines are estate grown.
