93 Points Wine Spectator: Dense and velvety, this big red delivers flavors of currant, blackberry, cocoa and licorice. Ripe and heady, but well-integrated tannins and bright acidity keep this fresh and balanced. In the modern style. Monastrell, Drink now through 2028.
WINE INFORMATION
Jumilla is located in southeastern Spain, and Monastrell is its main grape. The region has a continental climate with some Mediterranean influence to soften the cold winters. The soil has high limestone content, lending focus to the grapes. Jumilla receives about 3000 hours of sun annually, so grapes ripen readily; rainfall is scant. Monastrell is a thick-skinned, drought-tolerant, late- ripening grape, well suited to the region.
Bodegas Ego is a young winery founded by Santos Ortíz in 2011. It possesses 25 hectares of vineyards with bush vines about 50 years old. Grapes for this wine were harvested by hand into small containers and hand sorted. Grapes were vinified separately with malolactic fermentation happening in new American and French Barrels. The wine was aged 18 months in new French oak.
