Aromas of plums and black cap raspberries are inviting in the glass. The wine is medium plus in body, with ripe, soft tannins that give a beautifully round mouthfeel. Juicy fruits of plums, raspberries and licorice are structured by a touch of perky acidity.
WINE INFORMATION
João Ramos is one of the leading winemakers in Portugal. He chose Alentejo as the first region in which to make wine after a long career as a consultant winemaker, eventually planting his own vineyards around the city of Estremoz in 1989. The Alentejo plain is beautiful and renowned for its culture, hunting and rich gastronomic tradition. Estremoz, located in central-eastern Portugal, is internationally famous for its marble. The vineyard soils are composed of schist and clay-limestone and the climate is continental with dry harvests.
Fruit for this hand-crafted wine is sourced from 1,000 ft high schist and limestone vineyards surrounding the J Portugal Ramos Vila Santa winery. Vines are 20-30 years old. This wine is unoaked; it ferments and ages in stainless steel tanks.
The Vila Santa winery was built in 1997 and enlarged in 2000 and 2017. Today it serves as the headquarters of João Portugal Ramos Group.
