Tasting Notes

This is an herbaceous wine, reminiscent of a Greek white. Lightly tropical aromas of pineapple and melon mix with savory herbs and lead to more flavors of herbs like fresh rosemary and thyme, along with vanilla, almond, straw, pear and melon. This is medium weight with fresh acidity.

The Fernández de Piérola winery was founded in 1996 with the aim to produce quality wines with a personality different from the standardized taste of most Rioja wines. This is a small family winery producing grapes that come from the region of Moreda (Rioja Alavesa), with at least 50% estate owned.

After a very dry growing season, 2018 saw some rain in late September, which was perfect for the evolution of maturation, providing better balance and increasing final fruit expectations. There was brief skin contact maceration of destemmed grapes at cold temperatures before fermentation for 36 hours. The must was then carefully separated from the skins and fermented in contact with its lees stainless still tanks.

White Tempranillo is a variety originated from a natural genetic mutation from a single cane of a red Tempranillo vine in 1988 in an old vineyard in Murillo del Río Leza (La Rioja).
