WINE INFORMATION
In the 1990’s Mendoza-born Manuel Mas returned to his birthplace and established Finca La Anita, named after his mother. This was one of the pioneering wineries in Argentina to focus on producing premium quality wines at a time when most of the industry was about volume. Finca La Anita is located in the Alto Agrelo region South of Mendoza renowned for its specific agroecological conditions including rich alluvial and clay soils and large thermal amplitude. The average altitude is around 1,000 meters abs and irrigation sources are snowmelt from the nearby Andes mountains and underground wells.
The Estate has 72 hectares planted to Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The vines average 30 years old and are planted on original rootstock. The vineyards are harvested by hand.
This Syrah was vinified from grapes at our Finca in Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. These old vineyards are located at 900 meters above sea level and have a naturally low yield (4 to 5 t/ha). It was fermented in stainless steel tanks with selected yeast. Malolatic fermentation occurs spontaneously at controlled temperatures. The wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of French and American oak.
TASTING NOTES
This aromatic wine begins with aromas of black fruit, licorice, dusty cocoa, mulberries and berry pie. On the palate, this rich wine gives black fruit, licorice root, clove, milk chocolate, black pepper and bark. This is a great example of an elegant, full bodied wine with enough structure and a long finish.
FOOD PAIRING
Like many full bodied Syrahs, this wine would pair well with grilled meats, wild mushrooms and aged cheeses. It could also be enjoyed with any dish dressed in barbecue sauce or even chili. Rich pastas or roasted venison would work too.
