Tasting Notes

Nicely aromatic with notes of nectarine, honeysuckle, Asian pear, melon, citrus and crushed rocks. The aromas translate onto complex flavors on the palate with a beautiful round mouthfeel. It is still a refreshing wine but certainly bigger in body that you might expect from a Pinot Grigio.

WINE INFORMATION

Elena Walch Family Estates is a family-owned and run winery in Alto Adige.  Elena Walch studied architecture before marrying into one of the oldest and well-known wine families in Alto Adige.  She brought fresh, modern ideas to the winery, moving the traditional establishment to the next level of success.  Her two daughters, Julie and Karoline Walch (the fifth generation of Walchs) are now responsible for operating the family business.

The estate is dedicated to its terroir – sustainably farming 55 hectares, including the two top vineyards Castel Ringberg in Caldaro and Kastelaz in Tramin.  Grapes for this wine come from vineyards planted in calcareous soils with clay, sand and porphyric parts. The slopes are steep facing southeast and southwest between 250 and 600m. An interplay of brisk mountain and warmer mid-level vineyards.

After hand-harvest, the grapes are carefully crushed and pressed. The fresh must is statically clarified at low temperatures and then gently fermented at a controlled temperature of 20°C in steel tanks. The young wine matures in steel tanks for several months on its fine lees.

Alto Adige is home to a mild, Alpine-continental climate with over three hundred days of sun per year.  To the north, the Alps protect the region’s vineyards from the cold winds, while to the south, the land is open, encouraging warm air currents from Lake Garda and the Mediterranean.

FOOD PAIRING

Enjoy with chicken, creamy cheeses, pasta, spicy sausage, grilled vegetables and Asian dishes. Salads and lighter appetizers would go well with this wine too. Roasted squash, garlicky potatoes or charcuterie are additional options. This is a versatile wine that has concentration and it is fresh so don’t be afraid of pairing with heartier meals.
