WINE INFORMATION
Now in the third generation, the Thevenet family farms 30 hectares centered on the village of Pierreclos in the heart of the Maconnais. The Thevenet brothers (Benjamin, Jonathan and Aurélien) and their mother, Helène, took over from the father, Jean-Claude, when he passed away at the too-early age of 54. They also oversee a successful nursery business that supplies vines to family-owned domaines in Burgundy and the Champagne district.
This Pinot Noir comes from the village of Bussières and is sourced from the lieu-dit “Les Clos.” The vines are south-facing at 350 feet above sea level on gently sloping hills that are principally composed of clay. These are densely planted and average 30 years in age. The fruit tends to ripen early due to its excellent exposure.
Grapes are completely destemmed and fermented using natural yeasts. Pigeage (punching down) and rémontage (pumping over) are practiced during fermentation to extract flavor from the skins. Malolactic fermentation occurs spontaneously. There is no oak used here; this wine is fermented and aged in concrete vat. It is unfined and then bottled using very little sulfur.
