WINE INFORMATION
The Baur Family winery was established in Turckheim in 1741 and is now farmed by the ninth generation. The domaine consists of 27 acres of exceptionally situated vineyards, many with granite soil or located in the Grand Cru vineyard known as Brand. They feel their deep knowledge of the terroir and strict work in the vineyards (biodynamic since 2001) creates a high level of balance, purity and complexity in the wines.
Grapes for this cuvée come specifically from a site named Schlittweg with fine sand and coarse pebbles. They are hand harvested, fermented with natural yeasts, and aged for ten months in stainless steel before bottling with very little sulfur.
Pinot Noir is the only red grape authorized in Alsace, a region typically known for aromatic white grape varieties such as Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The region lies along the border with Germany in northeastern France and is categorized as a cool, dry climate, protected from rain by the Vosges mountains. Historically, Pinot Noir had been difficult to ripen and produced lighter wines with tart fruit, but this wine is a perfect example of how the rising temperatures of climate change have produced favorable results--plush wines with density. Combined with lower yields and dedicated farming practices, Alsace Pinot Noirs are rising stars.
TASTING NOTES
On the nose, you’ll find bright and inviting aromas of raspberry, cherry and hints of earth. The palate is medium weight and shows excellent ripeness with floral notes such as dried rose petals, light spice, red cherries, pomegranate, raspberries, forest floor, minerality and rounded tannins. Acid is integrated, yet vibrant.
FOOD PAIRING
Pair this lovely Pinot Noir with pork, chicken, turkey or denser, richer fish like salmon, trout or tuna. It would also be good with burgers or roast beef as it has enough weight to stand up to red meat. Potatoes Raclette, a very simple potato and cheese side dish would be a tasty partner, as would mushrooms or grilled eggplant.
