Tasting Notes

From the winery: Elegant and subtle, a low production volume which has brought out the best essences of the grape. It’s a powerful, balanced wine with exceptional elegance. The aromas of Tempranillo have been refined through the ageing process and it has notes of wood in the background and the personality of the variety. In the palate, it is a reflection of the nose: strong and powerful with mellow and refined tannins.

WINE INFORMATION

Designated as a DO in 1982, the Ribera del Duero wine region in Spain, is located on the great northern plateau of the Iberian Peninsula. At this altitude of over 3000 feet, Tempranillo, also known as Tinta del País or Tinto Fino, grapes have thin skins and refreshingly acidic fruit that makes the resulting wine delicious when young but also with a high capacity to age and evolve well over time.  The soils of this region consist primarily of silty sand and clay with alternating layers of limestone, marl, and chalky concretions.  Protected from the continent’s cold winds, the Duero Valley is generally warm and dry with a moderate to low rainfall.

The Moro family has been farming the same vineyards in the Ribera del Duero since 1932, the birth year of Emilio Moro (the patriarch) as well as the year in which their renowned Finca Resalso vineyard was planted. For two generations, the grapes were sold on the bulk market. In 1988, current proprietor José Moro Espinosa invested the family’s entire savings into winery equipment and Bodegas Emilio Moro was born. The bodega joined the D.O. Ribera del Duero in 1989 and quickly established itself as one of the region’s leading producers of top quality wines. The winery is located at the top of a bend in the Duero River in the town of Pesquera del Duero, just to the Northwest of Peñafiel.

This wine is the flagship bottling from the Bodega. It is produced from vines ranging from 15-25 years of age. It undergoes a 28-day skin maceration followed by 12 months of aging in French and American barrels.
