Tasting Notes

The Kamptal wine region in northern Austria gets its name from the river Kamp that flows north to south through the area’s steep, sunbaked, sparsely soiled terraces. Nearly 300 wineries are situated here, where the extreme differences in soil, elevation and microclimates create distinctive and unique wines from estate to estate. Cooler climate red and white grapes fill the region’s vineyards though the rich and spicy Gruner Veltliner, along with flintly and age-worthy Rieslings, remains the star varietal.

The Hiedler wine story began with the formation of the winery in 1856 and continues today as the fifth generation of Hiedler vintners maintains the family’s long-standing commitment to the region. In 1992 Hiedler collaboratively founded the Association Österreichische Traditionsweingüter (Traditional Austrian Wineries) elevating the region while also preserving dwindling plantings of native grape varieties.

The Hiedler vineyards are certified sustainable, and the vines are deeply-rooted in the eponymous loess soils formed over the millennia by deposits of weathering alpine rock, crushed under the weight of ice age glaciers.

Grapes for this wine were harvested by hand and from multiple vineyards during the first two weeks of September. In the cellar they are destemmed and crushed, then gently pressed, unsulphured, with low pressure. Fermentation takes place in temperature-regulated stainless steel tanks, where partial malolactic fermentation occurs. The wine is aged for several months on the fine lees. Finally, the wine was bottled during the waxing moon, in February of 2020.
