Tasting Notes

Stefano Massone’s Piedmont vineyards are located in the warmer southeastern part of the Piedmont, in Gavi and Nizza Monferrato. This is a place of rolling hills, less rugged than the Langhe and Asti. Gavi produces white wine using the Cortese grape; this is the focus of Massone’s wine. Monferrato is known primarily for red wines based on Barbera, Grignolino, and Freisa, often grown in the same vineyard as a field blend. The estate is farmed organically. There is no need for insecticides; no systemic (carried through the sap of the wines) plant protection products, including herbicides, are used in the vineyards, nor is fertilizer. Grass grows between the rows; every other row is mowed, with the cuttings used as mulch.

This is the inaugural vintage of this wine. Vines grow on gray marl soils at 200 meters above sea level with south/southeastern exposure. Grapes are harvested both manually and by machine at the end of September. The fruit is destemmed and gently crushed, and the must ferments at controlled temperature in stainless steel. The wine is racked several times and goes through malolactic fermentation. It sees no wood but spends 8-10 months in tank before bottling with very little sulfur.


Nicely aromatic and welcoming—plummy and lightly spicy, full and ripe. The palate is also ripe, with Barbera acidity balanced by juicy dark fruit. The structure and flavor of this wine really invite pairing with food, and supple tannins reinforce the idea. It is medium in body and length.


This is a young, fresh wine that can go with any part of a meal. Pair with your favorite spaghetti dish or the pizza of your choice. Any form of lasagna would work. Try it with minestrone or Italian wedding soup. A cheese and salumi plate would also be a good match. If you are not feeling like eating Italian food, enjoy with roasted chicken, grilled salmon, or veggie burgers with grilled vegetables.
