Podere 414 Morellino Scansano 2020

Tasting Notes

This is a densely colored wine with primary aromas of red fruit, spice, and a touch of wood. It is clean and round in the mouth with enough acidity to keep it lively. There’s a touch of both earth and salt, wild cassis, blackberry, and black cherry, with a bit of violet florality. Medium plus in body with a longer finish.

WINE INFORMATION

The Maremma Toscana was drained in the 1930s; since then, it has become one of Italy’s riches viticultural areas. In the 1960s, large land holdings were broken into smaller farms called podere. Enologist Maurizio Castelli purchased a 30-hectare farm and fulfilled his dream of an integrated farm. Although most of the lots sold went to subsistence farmers, Maurizio ran his according to biodynamic principles with a focus on grape growing. His son Simone and wife Mara (an agronomist) now run the property; they decided the name 414, its lot number, was as good as any. They now have 13 hectares certified organic; absolutely no chemical fertilizers or herbicides are used.  The vineyards are densely planted to primarily Sangiovese, locally known as Morellino. They rent another five, and work with Simone’s brother Gaddo, who handles sales and marketing.  Morellino di Scansano became a DOC in 1978 and was upgraded to DOCG with the 2007 vintage. Italian wine law does not require aging in wood for the normale wine, which can be released as early as the March after harvest. The Reserva can be released on Jan. 1 after two years of aging, one of which must be in wood.

This wine is made traditionally in thermo-conditioned concrete tanks and small truncated conical wooden vats fermented only with indigenous yeasts at 27-29°C. There is a fairly long (15-20 days) maceration on the skins, with frequent pumping over and delestage. The wine ages for 12 months in small 25-hl barrels and 500-liter tonneaux.
