Clos Fornelli Vermentinu 2018

Tasting Notes

Lightly floral aromas, as well as notes of peach and honey introduce this wine. The palate is medium-plus in body with flavors of peach, apricot, jasmine, beeswax, almond and almond skin. This is dry with refreshing, medium-plus acidity, a light pleasant bitterness, and an attractive finish.

This winery is owned by Josée Vanucci and her husband Fabrice Couloumère. The first vintage was 2005; before then, the grapes were sent to the local co-op. They grow only native grapes, including some rare varieties. The estate is located on the east side of Corsica which is more mountainous and thus provides cooler nights and less sun exposure. The climate is otherwise hot and dry, although sea breezes moderate the vineyards and help retain acidity in the grapes.

The soil is composed of alluvial pebbles, the result of erosion of nearby rock due to the Barone River. The 50 acres of vineyards are organic with lower than the allowed yields coming from 25-35 year old vines. Grapes are pressed in the gravity-flow winery, then fermented using natural yeasts and aged in stainless steel. Very little sulphur is added at bottling.
