Tasting Notes

This deeply colored wine is quite aromatic, offering rich black fruits, both dried and fresh, licorice, smoke, kelp, and bittersweet chocolate. The palate is beautifully structured, with soft sweet tannins. Flavors are lovely, with red and black fruits, spice, and smoke. All in all, this is a medium-bodied wine with very good weight, intensity, and length.


Podere 414, located in the province of Grosetto (southwest Tuscany) within the DOC of Morellino di Scansano, was founded in 1997 by Simone Castelli with the help of his brother Gaddo. They are the sons of famous consulting enologist Maurizio Castelli; Simone is the proprietor and enologist (his wife Mara is an agronomist); Gaddo handles sales and marketing. Simone inherited 2.5 hectares (ha) in a plot known as Podere 414, “Farm 414,” the number given to the farm during the redistribution of land from the division of a large estate in the 1960s. All recipients of plots during the land reform made a heavy commitment to preserving the local wild ecosystem. The EU considers Grosetto Maremma along with the Provence and the north of Scotland to be the best-preserved natural oases in Europe. Today the brothers own nearly 10 ha of vines and rent another five, all densely planted and farmed organically.


Grapes for this wine grow in clay soils at 230 meters above sea level. They are harvested from the second week in September to the first week of October. Grapes ferment in temperature-controlled cement tanks with natural yeasts followed by a long 15-18-day maceration on the skins at 27-29°C. Pumpovers and punchdowns are performed manually during this time. The wines ages in cement and 500-liter tonneaux before being bottled.
