WINE INFORMATION
Cellers Unió traces its history to 1942, when Franco's regime promoted the “Unión de Cooperativas del Campo de la Provincia de Tarragona” which, unlike other firms of its time, was not headquartered in the capital of the province but rather in the nearby city of Reus. Cellers Unió formed its current iteration as it dissociated from the state-sponsored “UTECO” (which dissolved) in 1963 and transformed itself into a cooperative. With its new independence, Cellers Unió started to approach cooperatives and land workers with the aim of working in collaboration with them in order to improve the wine producing processes through modernization. Today, Cellers Unió operates four winery facilities in Catalonia and, with its 91 associated cooperatives, produces over 20 million liters of wine annually.
Montsant is located in the centre of Catalonia, forming a ring around the famous region of Priorat.
The grapes used to make this wine are from older vines. The wine is aged for at least 10 months in oak before it is bottled.
TASTING NOTES
Aromas of black berry fruits emanate alongside spice, tobacco, and forest floor. On the palate, this wine is medium-plus in body with notes of wet leaves, clove, blackberry pie, and hints of licorice root.
FOOD PAIRING
This is a wine to be served with red meats, roasted foods and hearty fare. Try it with rosemary and peppercorn spiced lamb chops or a hearty stew, think beans or lentils. This wine would stand up nicely next to rich tomato-based pasta dishes as well.
