Tasting Notes

This is a dry Pinot Gris with elegance and depth. Aromas and flavors of lemon zest, apricot, whit peach, light tropical fruits and a hint of smoke. It is medium in body with refreshing acidity and medium finish.

Located in northeast France, Alsace stretches over 110 km north-south.  The area is protected from westerly winds and rain by the Vosges Mountains; its average rainfall is among the lowest in France.  Vines are planted on hillsides facing east and south at between 200 and 450 meters above sea level.  There are over 20 soil types, including limestone, gypsum, clay, silt, sandy-gravel, granite, and sandstone.

This wine comes from a family-run estate that has been making wine since 1958.  It took its current form in 1963 when brothers Andre and Louis combined their properties.  Its 45+ acres include a Grand Cru vineyard (Rosaker) and two Cru Classé vineyards of which they are the exclusive owners; they also hold long-term leases on other vineyards.  Today, cousins Christophe and Marc Mittnacht run the domaine.  The estate has been biodynamic since 1999 and is now certified by Ecocert.

The estate produces a number of wines, almost all (including this one) fermented with indigenous yeasts and all made with minimal interventions from the winemaker.  This means mostly neutral fermentation vessels and little to no fining or filtering.  The result is wines with stunning intensity and purity, wines that are grown rather than manufactured.  The varietal bottlings are precise but rich representations of both grape and region.
