Tasting Notes

92 Points Vinous: A highly perfumed bouquet evokes mineral-laced candied fig, tangerine, white flowers and toasted nuts, and hints of ginger and beeswax emerge slowly. Penetrating, concentrated and emphatically mineral in character, with juicy acidity enlivening orchard and citrus fruit and lemon curd flavors. Rich but vibrant in style, displaying impressive finishing thrust and strong, mineral-driven persistence. (JR)

Along the steep, narrow valley that traces the northern Rhône, the appellations of Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Saint-Joseph take their place among the great wines of France. The appellation is known for its red wines made using Syrah grapes but it also produces white wines made using Roussanne and Marsanne grape varieties. Only 10% of the production is white wine.

Wine growers in the northern Rhône since 1491, the Chave family (currently helmed by Gérard and son Jean-Louis) represents 16 generations of unbroken lineage committed to the production of some of the finest Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Jean Louis joined his father in 1992 after completing undergraduate studies at University of Connecticut and a degree in oenology at Davis. It was at that time that he completely replanted vineyards on the family’s original estate in Saint-Joseph, which had been abandoned in the early 1900’s when phylloxera hit the region.

Circa, formally known as Celeste, is a blend of old-vine Roussane planted in Mauves on granitic slopes. Fermented in barrel and aged for 14 months in barriques.
