Tasting Notes

Lunta is a project of the Mendel Winery, the combined effort of proprietor Anabelle Sielecki and talented winemaker Roberto de la Mota. Together they select grapes from their oldest vines, all planted in high elevation sites of Mendoza’s Lujan de Cuyo appellation between 900 and 1000 meters above sea level, crafting wines with depth and character.  For the Lunta label, Roberto has mentored Santiago Mayorga, born to a winemaking family and primed to take the reins as one of Argentina’s prominent winemakers.


Lunta Malbec comes from the southernmost parcel of the Mendel estate vineyard, from vines ranging from 60 to 85 years old. This section of the vineyard has deeper soils with more clay, and the vines here produce a fruitier wine as compared to the Mendel Malbec.  


The grapes were hand harvested to small boxes, with a second manual sort at the winery. Fermentation was carried out in 80 hectoliter (2,115 gallon) tanks with manual punch down and a 2-week maceration.  The grapes were pressed gently and sent to French oak barrel for malolactic fermentation.  The wines were then aged for 12 months, half in French oak (1/3 new, 1/3 second use, 1/3 third use) and half in steel tank.  Bottled unfiltered in September 2013.
