It is intensely aromatic with peach, white flowers, fennel, limestone and melon. On the palate this wine has limestone notes with peach, pineapple, apricot skin, and light citrus. Medium to plus in body and in concentration with supporting acidity and great complexity.
The grapes for this wine come from the ungrafted Huarta vineyard; one of the highest vineyards in Chile, it is planted on calcareous soil with heavy limestone deposits. All work is done by hand. Fermentation happens in stainless steel tanks. Twenty percent of the juice goes through malolactic fermentation to give the wine a rounder mouthfeel. The rest is aged on the fine lees for 4 months prior to bottling.
The Olivier family started Viña Mayu in 2005. They honor the place and its history with the name of the winery: “Mayu” is the Incan word for the Milky Way’s river of stars. The driving force for starting a winery in Elqui was a passion for the challenge of transforming a tract of desert with enormous potential into a vineyard producing premium wines.
