This delicious red represents the bottled essence of the sunny south of France. Loads of sour cherries are present, along with sandalwood, peat and smoke aromas and flavors. Spicy on the palate with black pepper notes, tree bark, blackberries, mulberries and Asian spices. The texture is rich, fleshy and plush. It admirably proves that creative winemaking, good sourcing, and a minimal intervention policy can result in tremendous value.
This wine is non-vintage because Louis Barroul, the winemaker-owner, reserves some older Grenache wine to put into this cuvee and composes it similarly to the Solera system used in making sherry. The “vin de table” labelling doesn’t allow producers to designate a vintage, but it is interesting to note that 50% of the wine is from the 2014 vintage and the rest is from mixed vintages going all the way back to 1999.
It is produced from a combination of young Grenache vines from the estate, blended with old vine Grenache that Louis discovered in the Roussillon region. This is a 100% basket-pressed wine. The interesting label displays sketches of Louis’ son, James, playing in the winery.
