Tasting Notes

Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Noir and the French blending grape, Cinsault.  Bramble, boysenberry, and red currants aromas mingle with secondary notes of leather, smoke, and baked earth.  It is medium weight, showcasing flavors of dried leaves, grilled plum, sour cherry, and a persistent smoky, spicy tone on the palate.  


The climate is temperate with cool ocean breezes and there are a variety of soils and meso-climates in the region.  This comes from sourced fruit, but long-term contracts with growers are the mode of operation.


Bob Lynde of Portland, Oregon is the founder of this project.  He is the Owner/Director of Cape Classics, a New York-based importer of South African wines.  He sold it in 2005 to develop the Fat Barrel line. 10% of wine sales benefit AIDS relief in Africa.
